Jersey Zoo’s new gorilla house officially opened by HRH The Princess Royal

HRH The Princess Royal visited Jersey on Thursday 30 April, as Patron of Durrell Wildlife Trust for more than 50 years HRH officially opened Jersey Zoo’s new state-of-the-art gorilla house.

The facility which is nine times larger than the previous enclosure, it has two large indoor viewing spaces, eight dens, dedicated training and weighing areas, as well as systems to control the temperature and humidity. It has been designed to encourage the gorilla’s natural behaviour, with deep bark chip flooring for foraging, climbing structures up to five metres high and ropes and platforms for movement and play.

The development of the new gorilla house was supported in part by public fundraising, including the 2019 Go Wild Gorillas trail, which raised more than £1.1 million.
