His Excellency Vice Admiral Sir Jerry Kyd has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Science by the University of Southampton at a ceremony at the Guildhall on Tuesday 22 July 2025.
Sir Jerry said ‘I am thrilled and very humbled to have been awarded an Honorary Doctorate from my ‘alma mater’, where I studied Oceanography and Biology nearly 40 years ago. I am very proud indeed to be continuing to support such a vibrant and world-beating educational and research organization – the University goes from strength to strength. One new initiative that really reflects the University’s ambition is the proposed building of an Institute of Medical Innovation in partnership with the University Hospital of Southampton. My wife, Karen, and I are really excited to be supporting and promoting this incredible project which will bring medics and researchers together in the fight against cancer, dementia, sight loss, infectious diseases and allergic conditions. It really will help drive life-changing medical breakthroughs faster than before and it will certainly put Southampton at the heart of medical discovery. As the Lieutenant-Governor of Jersey, I know how many Jersey people already benefit from specialised and routine health care at the University Hospital of Southampton Trust already, which is just great. I am very proud of the increasingly close links between Jersey and Southampton Hospital and the University.’
